DVD Synopsis

Cowboy Jack Clement is one of the great behind-the-scenes figures in the history of country and rock and roll, as well as a legendary eccentric in a field full of outsized personalities. As Sam Phillips' second-in-command at Sun Records, Clement recorded some of Jerry Lee Lewis's biggest hits, and helped Johnny Cash and Charlie Rich refine their styles. After moving to Texas, Clement cut a handful of early hits for George Jones and suggested he record "She Thinks I Still Care". In Nashville, he discovered Charley Pride and Townes Van Zandt and after deciding that recording studios were a bad environment for recording he turned his home into "The Cowboy Arms Hotel and Recording Spa," where he's cut sessions on everyone from Emmylou Harris to Frankie Yankovic. Clement has also written hit songs, produced a horror movie (Dear Dead Delilah), shot hours of video for a variety of unaired television special starring himself and his friends, and become known as one of the funniest and canniest minds in Nashville. Shakespeare Was a Big George Jones Fan: Cowboy Jack Clement's Home Movies is a documentary (produced in part by Clement himself) that takes a look at his life and career as well as offering a healthy portion of the anecdotes, philosophies and tall tales Clement is known to share. The film also includes excerpts from Clement's library of home movies and videos, including footage of him having fun with Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Dolly Parton, Kris Kristofferson and many more. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

This amiably eccentric documentary on amiably eccentric producer, musician and Nashville legend Cowboy Jack Clement gets a solid if unremarkable presentation on this DVD release from Shout Factory. Shakespeare Was A Big George Jones Fan has been transferred to disc in its original full-frame aspect ratio of 1.33:1, and the image looks sharp and clear, though some of the archival video material suffers a bit in comparison to the newer footage. The audio has been mastered in Dolby Digital Stereo and sounds fine, with excellent stereo separation. The interviews are in English, with no subtitles or multiple language options included. Bonus materials include twenty-five minutes of outtakes and bizarre comedy sketches from Clement, as well as a funny if rambling commentary tracks featuring Clement and his pal Alamo Jones. If the DVD release of Shakespeare Was A Big George Jones Fan doesn't add that much to the original film, it still treats the material with care and respect, and fans of the Cowboy shouldn't be disappointed. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
