DVD Synopsis

Ego-driven industrialist Alan Morrisey (Harry VanGorkum) has paid to develop the ultimate mining machine -- a nearly invincible vehicle that uses laser energy to burrow through anything. But the machine's creator, Brian Goodman (Craig Sheffer), knows that it is too good at what it does and could cause repercussions beneath the Earth's core. So he destroys it. Years later, Morrisey has hired another scientist, Allison Saunders (Terry Farrell), to rebuild the machine, and Goodman's predictions of devastation come true. There are earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcano eruptions around the world, and they're only getting worse. It's up to Goodman and his crack team of subterranean disaster fighters -- Sam Dalton (Bruce McGill) and Rodney Bedecker (Wil Wheaton) -- to save the planet by setting off a series of subterranean nuclear explosions, with Morrisey and Saunders along for the ride. Meanwhile, topside, the sinister Daryl Simmons (James Russo) is planning to sabotage the rescue in order to help the Chinese military. ~ Buzz McClain, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

B-grade adventure runs deep in the straight-to-DVD (or video, if you prefer) action flick Deep Core. Starring Craig Sheffer and Terry Farrell, =Deep Core is presented in a mediocre full-frame 1.33:1 version. While the images have a softness to them, most of the colors and black levels look very even. It's not clear if Deep Core was originally filmed in a widescreen ratio, but what is clear is that this transfer suffers from the same troubles as most standard full-frame transfers (including some grain and shimmer). Audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 and sounds decent. Directional effects are used during drilling sequences and there is a good amount of music that envelops the viewer as the action progresses. Also included on this disc is an English Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround track, as well as optional English and Spanish subtitles. =Deep Core's special features include a somewhat insightful commentary track by director Rodney McDonald and editor Randy Carter, as well as a trailer, a still gallery, and some cast and director biographies. For those in the mood for some low-budget disaster fun, dig no deeper than this edition of Deep Core. ~ Patrick Naugle, All Movie Guide
