Funeral in Berlin was the second of three films based on the Harry Palmer novels by Len Deighton. As he did in The Ipcress File, Michael Caine stars as Palmer, Deighton's bespectacled, somewhat disreputable British secret agent. In the manner of Graham Greene's The Third Man, Palmer is dispatched to Berlin to look into the highly suspicious defection of Soviet colonel Stok (Oscar Homolka). It is giving nothing away to reveal that Stok's death is a sham, and that Palmer is expected to engineer the "corpse"'s defection. To reveal any more, however, would be giving the game away. While the many fans of Michael Caine's 1960s Harry Palmer movies are still gorging themselves on all the extras that The Ipcress File DVD came with, they'll have to content themselves with the good transfer Funeral in Berlin has received on this Paramount DVD. The spy movie itself is very good and Paramount has released it in a pristine anamorphic widescreen transfer and an equally clean, well-balanced Dolby Digital 2.0 audio transfer. Since Caine's Harry Palmer is the grittier, working class cousin to the glitzy James Bond, it even makes sense that this DVD doesn't come with any extras. ~ Nick Dedina, All Movie Guide
