DVD Synopsis

"If they move, kill 'em!" Beginning and ending with two of the bloodiest battles in screen history, Sam Peckinpah's classic revisionist Western ruthlessly takes apart the myths of the West. Released in the late '60s discord over Vietnam, in the wake of the controversial Bonnie and Clyde (1967) and the brutal "spaghetti westerns" of Sergio Leone, The Wild Bunch polarized critics and audiences over its ferocious bloodshed. One side hailed it as a classic appropriately pitched to the violence and nihilism of the times, while the other reviled it as depraved. After a failed payroll robbery, the outlaw Bunch, led by aging Pike Bishop (William Holden) and including Dutch (Ernest Borgnine), Angel (Jaime Sanchez), and Lyle and Tector Gorch (Warren Oates and Ben Johnson), heads for Mexico pursued by the gang of Pike's friend-turned-nemesis Deke Thornton (Robert Ryan). Ultimately caught between the corruption of railroad fat cat Harrigan (Albert Dekker) and federale general Mapache (Emilio Fernandez), and without a frontier for escape, the Bunch opts for a final Pyrrhic victory, striding purposefully to confront Mapache and avenge their friend Angel. ~ Lucia Bozzola, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

Widely considered one of the best and most influential Westerns of all time, director Sam Peckinpah's bullet-ridden story of a gang of aging outlaws knowing that their way of life is rapidly disappearing is presented in this Warner Bros. original director's cut DVD. The film features an all-star cast from another era, including William Holden, Ernest Borgnine, Robert Ryan, and Edmond O'Brien. By the DVD returning the movie to its original director's cut status, it restores it to a version unseen since its July 1969 theatrical debut. The film is presented in a letterbox widescreen format with a soundtrack remastered in Dolby Digital 5.1, and the result is thunderous horses' hooves and sharp gunshots. Among the special features contained on the DVD are production notes and a 34-minute documentary entitled "The Wild Bunch: An Album in Montage." The documentary delves deeper into Peckinpah's working habits and the character of the man, and contains some interesting period footage of the film being shot on-location. ~ Russell Roberts, All Movie Guide

This ranks up there with The Good, the Bad and the Ugly as my most favorite westerns of all time, and I'm most certainly not alone in that opinion. The violence is legendary, the performances brilliant from William Holden on down to the most junior member of the Bunch, Jaime Sanchez. They are honorable, amoral, supportive and harsh with each other. A completely dysfunctional group that come together in an epic bloodbath that I've watched over and over again throughout the years. Can't say enough praise for this movie. GET IT.
