Synopsis

Based on the controversial sequel novel of the same name, Hannibal is the much-anticipated follow-up to the Oscar-winning The Silence of the Lambs (1991). Anthony Hopkins returns as Dr. Hannibal Lecter, one of the world's most cunning and feared serial killers, who resurfaces after a decade in hiding to toy with FBI agent Clarice Starling (Julianne Moore). As Starling's career flounders thanks to a drug bust gone wrong, Lecter attempts to elude a greedy Italian police detective (Giancarlo Giannini) who's willing to alert the authorities to his presence in Florence for a price. In the meantime, a maimed but wealthy former victim of Lecter's named Mason Verger (Gary Oldman) plots to get his revenge on the doctor in a most unusual and grisly fashion. The novel by Thomas Harris was adapted for director Ridley Scott by David Mamet and Steven Zaillian. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review

This ambitious follow-up to The Silence of the Lambs has been given an equally ambitious treatment on DVD. Two discs loaded with every kind of extra conceivable, with spectacular sound and picture, this is enough to make any Hannibal fan say, in the words of the film's titular character, "Goody goody." The picture is simply stunning. Presented in a 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen format, it makes John Mathieson's elegant cinematography shine. The sound is in razor sharp Dolby Digital 5.1 and gets well used throughout, most notably in the thundering shootout that opens the movie. Also on the first disc is a commentary from director Ridley Scott. This is an excellent commentary track, in which Scott gives every detail about what went into making the movie. From referencing the first film to re-imagining certain sequences from the novel, Scott touches on several key aspects of the film's creation. Moving over to the second disc, viewers can enjoy a plethora of deleted scenes. Clocking in at well over a half hour, these scenes include a look back at Lecter's cell from the first film and an alternate ending. All are offered with an optional commentary from Scott, who outlines a third possible ending for the film. Also included is "Breaking the Silence," an in-depth documentary that traces Hannibal from novel to screen and beyond, and a series of multi-angle looks at the film's creation, including storyboards and the aforementioned shootout. Lastly, an entire day can be spent perusing the various trailers, TV spots, and poster concepts that the DVD contains. Opinions on Hannibal were decidedly mixed, but word on this DVD edition will no doubt be uniformly positive. ~ Jeremy Brown, All Movie Guide
