A family film with one of the most eclectic casts ever assembled (
Clint Howard,
Shirley Jones,
Judge Reinhold, and a talking Chihuahua),
Ping! is in the doghouse when it comes to being on DVD. =Ping! features a 1.33:1 full-frame version of the film. As is often the case with a full-frame transfer, the picture quality suffers from lack of detail or depth (though it is not clear if
Ping! was even filmed originally in a matted widescreen format). The colors are generally clear, with some bleeding present. Overall this is a very mediocre and unimpressive transfer. Audio is presented in Dolby Digital 2.0 and is about as stellar as the video portions on this disc. Dialogue, annoyingly bouncy music, and comedic effects are all mixed well, though the dialogue does tend to fade in certain scenes. Also included on this disc are English subtitles. =Ping! may look as if it is packed with features, but once viewed it's obvious they are about as small as the dog this movie is based on. Fox has included a full-frame trailer for
Ping!, as well as some biographies on the cast and director
Chris Baugh. Rounding out the supplements is a very pointless photo gallery (with 12, I repeat 12 photos from the movie), plus a "Ping Chihuahua Profile" that is thankfully very short. DVD fans will be barking up the wrong tree if they decide to pick up this edition of
Ping! (unless, of course, they have very young children). ~ Patrick Naugle, All Movie Guide
