DVD Synopsis

It was "The Night HE Came Home," warned the posters for John Carpenter's career-making horror smash. In Haddonfield, Ilinois, on Halloween night 1963, 6-year-old Michael Myers inexplicably slaughters his teenage sister. His psychiatrist Dr. Loomis (Donald Pleasence) can't penetrate Michael's psyche after years of institutionalization, but he knows that, when Myers escapes before Halloween in 1978, there is going to be hell to pay in Haddonfield. While Loomis heads to Haddonfield to alert police, Myers spots bookish teenager Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) and follows her, constantly appearing and vanishing as Laurie and her looser friends Lynda (P.J. Soles) and Annie (Nancy Loomis) make their Halloween plans. By nightfall, the responsible Laurie is doing her own and Annie's babysitting jobs, while Annie and Lynda frolic in the parent-free house across the street. But Annie and Lynda are not answering the phone, and suspicious Laurie heads across the street to the darkened house to see what is going on ... . ~ Lucia Bozzola, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

Originally released in a limited edition two-disc set by Anchor Bay, the sought-after "television version" of John Carpenter's horror masterpiece Halloween becomes readily available to all horror buffs with DVD players. However, this new Halloween disc is nothing to scream about. Featuring only 12 extra minutes of footage, this "extended edition" is hardly worth the purchase price for such small potatoes. The 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen presentation looks very good (just like its predecessor from Anchor Bay), though this disc lacks the newly remastered Dolby Digital 5.1 remix that other editions of Halloween sport. The Dolby Mono 1.0 track is sufficient, if very unimpressive. A few notes about the shooting of the extra scenes are also included on this edition, but they are hardly worth mentioning. Although the extra footage is fun for Halloween fans, they should have been included on other Halloween editions so as not to force fans to do a double dip into their wallets. For diehard fans of the Halloween series this disc will be a must; for anyone else, skip this and go with a different edition floating around the video shelves. Unfortunately, this edition is a trick, not a treat. ~ Patrick Naugle, All Movie Guide

Teddy B. (tigerted) from TUJUNGA, CA wrote on 11/3/2009...

At that time, NBC wanted to air "Halloween" but the network censors slashed so many
'graphic' scenes, that there wasn't enough movie left to fill the timeslot! John Carpenter was asked by his producer/co-writer/ girlfriend Debra Hill to go back and shoot 'new' scenes so they could air it on NBC primetime on Halloween night. So, during
production of "Halloween II", Carpenter simply borrowed Jamie-Lee Curtis and Donald Pleasance for a few days and shot scenes that weren't in the original theatrical version.
I think it adds to the storyline and gives Michael Myers' character more depth. This is the "TV Version" which was not available for a long time until now. For die-hard "Halloween" fans, this is a must. Watch for what Myers scribbled on the back of the
mental ward's door. This film is the one that started it all. They don't make them like this anymore!
