DVD Synopsis

The third and final TV-movie in the "Joshua Cabe" saga, this ABC effort stars John McIntire as rascally rancher-turned-sheriff Joshua Cabe, a role played by Buddy Ebsen in the original The Daughters of Joshua Cabe) and by Dan Dailey in The Daughters of Joshua Cabe Return. This time out, Cabe is accused of a murder he didn't commit and carted off to jail, there to await hanging. Coming to his rescue are Joshua's "daughters"--actually three unrelated shady ladies named Charity (Liberty Williams), Ada (Renne Jarrett) and Mae (Lezlie Dalton)--who devise a brilliant and thoroughly unbelievable escape plan. The New Daughters of Joshua Cabe aired on May 29, 1976. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

Put as simply as possible, this is a down-and-dirty transfer of a made-for-TV movie. Brentwood's source for this DVD was apparently a broadcast print, complete with dirt and scratches on the opening credits and highly compressed sound. The color is somewhat pale but balanced and consistent, the detail fair, and the movie has been given a decent chapter breakdown. As to the film itself, its plot seems to consist of the leftovers of any number of mid-'60s television Western episodes, with an offbeat twist -- Joshua Cabe (John McIntire) is a sheriff unjustly convicted of murdering an unarmed man, and his three adopted daughters, all felons of one kind or another, set out with his brother (Jack Elam, who steals every scene he's in) to prove him innocent. Note: This isn't a sequel to The Daughters of Joshua Cabe, which starred Buddy Ebsen, so much as a reconception of the whole idea, with a less interesting cast of women though a better pair of male leads; it was projects like this, involving three women scamming and working undercover, albeit in an Old West setting, that kept producer Aaron Spelling busy until he perfected it with Charlie's Angels. The DVD is easy to use, opening on a simple menu, and includes as a bonus the Little Rascals/Our Gang short Spooky Hooky, in which Spanky contrives to get himself, Alfalfa, Buckwheat, and Porky out of school to go to the circus, only to discover that their class is going to the circus, which means getting back the note asking that they be excused. The print looks soft and the image breaks down in certain spots. ~ Bruce Eder, All Movie Guide
