DVD Synopsis

Morgan Freeman returns as forensic psychologist Dr. Alex Cross in this thriller based on the novel by James Patterson (whose work also formed the basis of the hit Kiss the Girls). Gary Soneji (Michael Wincott) is a brilliant but remorseless psychopath who has landed a teaching position at an exclusive private school in Washington, D.C. Using his extensive knowledge of kidnapping (he's taught a class on Charles Lindbergh), Soneji abducts one of his students - Megan (Mika Boorem), whose father Hank Rose (Michael Moriarty) is a United States senator. Ollie MacArthur (Dylan Baker), the detective investigating the case, has strong words for Jezzie Flannigan (Monica Potter), the Secret Service agent who mistakenly let Megan slip through her fingers. But when the kidnapper contacts Dr. Cross, the psychologist is brought in on the case, and Cross seeks out Flannigan, who he believes might have a valuable insight into the case. Soon, Cross and Flannigan come to the terrible realization that this crime only represents the tip of the iceberg for the ruthless Soneji. Along Came a Spider also features Penelope Ann Miller, Jay O. Sanders, and Kim Hawthorne. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

The terrifying sequel to Kiss The Girls, Along Came a Spider stars Morgan Freeman and Monica Potter as two frantic partners trying to piece together a chilling crime. Paramount has put together some nice video and audio portions to temper the lack of supplements on this disc. The 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer is very good, almost reference quality. All colors and black levels are spot-on and show no signs of imperfections. Audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 and is also first-rate. Jerry Goldsmith's tense score complements a very nice directional mix of effects and dialogue. Also included on this disc is a Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround track in both French and English, as well as captions and subtitles in English. Sadly, the only extra features available on this disc are a theatrical trailer in anamorphic widescreen and a 14-minute "making of" feature that tends to lean more towards promotional than insightful. If fans of Kiss The Girls are up for another round with detective Alex Cross, then this DVD edition of Along Came a Spider may be just the thing. ~ Patrick Naugle, All Movie Guide

This is the BEST Morgan Freeman thriller I have ever seen - in fact I've watched it 3 times n it continues to provide wonderful watching. This is not one of those thrillers, where u can take a phone call, do bills - nope yr eyes have to be on the screen every minute. I was so delighted - how I wish there was another one like this waiting for me to watch! Pure thrill n delight!

Warning! Spoiler Alert in my review!

I had to rewatch this one because I recently had read the series and hadn't seen the movie in years. I was surprised that the writers killed off Soneji in the movie since he makes his appearance in several books after "Along Came a Spider". I understand some of the other things changed to make the story more "politically correct", but they really didn't leave room for a continuation of the series (after "Kiss the Girls" by killing off a key villain so early.
