DVD Synopsis

The murderous spirit of Jason Vorhees lives on in this horror sequel, although the plot hinges on the mystery of whether the killer's body actually survives. Opening with a nightmare prologue in which Corey Feldman reprises his role as Tommy Jarvis, the boy who killed Jason in the previous installment, the film jumps forward several years to when a teenaged Tommy (John Shepherd), haunted by visions of Jason returning to life, moves into a group home for mentally disturbed kids. Almost as soon as he arrives, Tommy witnesses the death of Joey (Dominick Brascia), an overweight, annoying boy who is hacked to death by psychopathic patient Vic (Mark Venturini). Although Vic ends up safely behind bars, other bodies begin to turn up -- more than 20 by the end of the film. Tommy's own violent streak, displayed when he lashes out at a fellow resident, makes him a suspect; he even doubts his own sanity. But as the bloodshed continues, Tommy finds himself allied with Reggie (Shavar Ross), the grandson of one of the home's employees, in a desperate bid to survive the carnage and find out who the killer behind the hockey mask really is. The producers of the Friday the 13th series actually planned to end it with Friday the 13th -- The Final Chapter, but the box-office success of that film paved the way for the series to continue. ~ Brian J. Editorial Review of DVD

The maniacal Jason Voorhees is back in Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning, the fifth chapter in the terrifying horror series. Paramount has done a nice job on this 1.85:1 anamorphic transfer, which features bright colors and bold black levels. Although some imperfections exist (grain and dirt abound), this is due largely to the low budget of the film. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital Mono, and while all dialogue, music and effects are mixed evenly, this track tends to have a very flat and hollow quality to it. Also included on this disc are English subtitles. As with the previous four releases, the DVD's only extra feature is a widescreen theatrical trailer that is only worth one viewing. While fans will be happy to receive this fifth installment in a widescreen edition, the lack of extra features may leave them thirsting for bloodshed. ~ Patrick Naugle, All Movie Guide

I've seen worse films, but not many. Sat through this because I'd just watched the first four entries. Acting is unbelievably bad. Don't know how the franchise survived this release. Skip this one altogether.

What happened? The first 4 films were very well done until this one arrived. Sure, we get the usual naughty topless girls and the graphic murders, but the spirit and fun of the franchise is lost. I blame it on Paramount for rushing to the bank after the 'final' chapter did so well.
Anyway, you'll have to be patient if you're watching them in order. The only sequel after this one worth watching is 'Freddy VS. Jason.'
Of course, they hit the sewer with part 8. Unwatchable ! Save your credits for the recent re-make or The Final Chapter.
