DVD Synopsis

The debut project from co-star Michael Douglas' production company Further Films, this comic crime caper uses the narrative devices of multiple points of view and flashbacks, à la Rashomon (1951) and that classic film's many imitators. A late-night slaying at a bar called McCool's is the point of departure as Detective Dehling (John Goodman), bartender Randy (Matt Dillon), and Randy's lawyer-cousin Carl (Paul Reiser) project their fantasies onto the sexy Jewel (Liv Tyler), whose boyfriend (Andrew Dice Clay) is the corpse in question. As each man spills his guts -- Dehling to his priest, Randy to an aging hit man (Douglas), and Carl to his therapist (Reba McEntire) -- it becomes clear that the femme fatale Jewel has been manipulating the smitten men for her own purposes, namely a house full of cutting-edge electronic gadgets. One Night at McCool's is the debut American film from Norwegian commercial and music video director Harald Zwart. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

The DVD of One Night at McCool's is loaded down with extras -- including such fun stuff as Liv Tyler's wardrobe tests, theatrical trailers, a pair of music videos, a map of the locations, and a home video of the first script read-through with the cast sharing split screens with the scenes in the finished film -- but the one thing it doesn't have is director Harald Zwart's running commentary, unusual for high-end studio discs. True, the several deleted scenes have the option of hearing the director describe why the footage was left on the cutting room floor -- including his own cameo -- but the movie as a whole doesn't have it. But the viewer does get a rough-hewn "making of" documentary, a storyboards-to-finished-film segment, and superb Dolby Digital 5.1 sound. The letterboxed digital transfer is also very clean. ~ Buzz McClain, All Movie Guide

This isn't exactly my kind of movie but the ending will blow you away! You'll back up and watch it over and over. It's worth a watch just to see the ending.
