DVD Synopsis

The film begins in 1965, when disc jockey Adrian Cronauer (Robin Williams) is assigned to take over the AFR's Saigon radio broadcasts. In contrast to the dull, by-rote announcers that have preceded him, Cronauer is a bundle of dynamite, heralding each broadcast with a loud "Goooooood morning, Vietnaaaaam," playing whatever records tickle his fancy (even those not officially sanctioned by his hidebound superiors), and indulging in wild flights of improvisational fancy. Cronauer's immediate superior Lt. Hauk (Bruno Kirby), whose own notions of humor are puerile and pathetic, jealously attempts to dethrone Vietnam's favorite rock jock. Fortunately, Cronauer's popularity is such that he enjoys the full protection of the higher-ups. But when Cronauer, after experiencing the horrors of war first-hand, insists upon telling his listeners the truth instead of the official government line, he is instantly replaced by the unfunny Hauk and must struggle to get back on the air. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

Good Morning Vietnam has become one Robin Williams' signature films. The DVD release, however, is unfortunately nothing more than the chance to see the film in widescreen. Presented in non-anamorphic 1.85:1 widescreen, =Good Morning Vietnam looks and sounds good enough to be worth a rental by a fan or someone who has never seen the film, but really offers nothing to make the disc worth a purchase. Shot in a matted "flat" ratio instead of a wider "scope" ratio, the widescreen version does not differ drastically from the full-screen version available on video. The picture is sharper, the colors brighter, and Dolby Digital Sound helps the oldies soundtrack, but beyond a trailer, the disc is without any valuable supplements. A Robin Williams commentary might have been too much to hope for, but director Barry Levinson has recorded commentaries in the past and it would have been interesting to hear some insights on the film. Even some outtakes featuring Williams' improvisation would have given the disc greater value. As it is, it can't escape rental-only status. ~ Oliver Thornton, All Movie Guide
