In this reunion of Swingers co-stars Jon Favreau (making his feature directorial debut) and Vince Vaughn, the two star in a new Mob comedy set in the underbelly of New York City. Favreau plays Bobby, an aspiring boxer who has a lackluster record but refuses to give up his lifelong dream. Ricky (Vaughn) is a loose cannon hanger-on who dreams of breaking into the mob. When Bobby begins to get close to old-time Mob boss Max (Peter Falk), Ricky believes it is a way into organized crime. Max is more interested in Bobby carrying out orders, but he allows the two to perform a job In New York under the supervision of a smooth crime lord (music mogul Sean Combs). Ricky then is powered by the idea that he and Bobby are bigwigs in their new community of acquaintances and begins to assume the role of a high roller -- at the expense of his friend. Screenwriter/actor Jon Favreau and actor/co-producer Vince Vaughn follow up their hit Swingers with Made, the story of two friends trying to survive among the mob. Artisan has done a very nice job on this disc, starting off with a 1.77:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer. The image on this transfer looks very good with only minor imperfections hindering the print. A small amount of halo and edge enhancement exists, but overall the color schemes and black levels are very even and bright. Audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround as well as Dolby Digital 2.0. The 5.1 track utilizes surround in all speakers, mainly during scenes with loud music and background noise. Since Made is a dialogue-driven film and not an effects-heavy movie, the surround effects are generally kept to a minimum. Also included on this disc are Spanish subtitles. Made is presented in a "special edition" from Artisan and includes a nice array of extra features. To start with, there is a very funny and informative commentary track by Jon Favreau, Vince Vaughn, and co-producer Peter Billingsley (who also played the lead boy in A Christmas Story). This commentary should please fans, and also has the option of a telestrator light pen (where the commentators circle things that they point out in the film). Three documentaries totaling 40 minutes in length are included ("Getting It Made," "The Creative Process," and "Getting the Music of Made"), and together, they are a nice overview on the production of the film. Five deleted scenes (plus an alternate ending) and nine alternate scenes with optional commentary let the viewer glimpse at what was cut from the final film. A set of outtakes lets the viewer laugh along with the actors as they flub their lines. A scene edit workshop allows the viewer to mix and match certain scenes and edit them together while comparing them to the finished movie's scenes. Finally, there is a section of music cues that can be heard, a theatrical and teaser trailer for the film, some information on the principle cast and crew, and some thin production notes on the making of the movie. This is a very nice edition of Made that should keep viewers busy for hours on end. ~ Patrick Naugle, All Movie Guide
