DVD Synopsis

A failed effort to revive the big-budget movie musical, Newsies attempted to create toe-tapping, song-and-dance excitement out of the true story of an 1899 strike by newspaper boys against publishing magnate Joseph Pulitzer. The "newsies" band together to protest a pay cut by Pulitzer (Robert Duvall), organizing a union to protect their rights and ensure fair wages. They are helped along the way by Medda (Ann-Margret), a local dance-hall performer who befriends the boys and provides an opportunity for an additional song or two. Director Kenny Ortega had previously choreographed Dirty Dancing, and composer Alan Menken had provided the acclaimed scores for Beauty and the Beast and Little Shop of Horrors, but their work here failed to capture the spark of their popular successes. Unable to connect with older or younger viewers, Newsies gained a reputation as a major bomb that cut short an attempt to bring back the live-action musical, though in the intervening years it has gained a small but appreciative cult. ~ Judd Blaise, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

Kenny Ortega's musical Newsies comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. An English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital Surround, while a Spanish soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital Stereo. Spanish and French subtitles are accessible, and the English soundtrack is closed-captioned. Supplemental materials include a commentary track recorded by Ortega, a pair of featurettes, a short documentary about the real-life incident on which the film is based, storyboards, and a karaoke section. Whatever one thinks of this infamous turkey, Disney/Buena Vista has done a spectacular job with this disc. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide

I loved this movie, I could watch it over and over and over again! The music i.e. the songs & even the dancing, is really pretty good for these young kids. It's definitely a movie about the underdogs, I just loved it. Christian Bale is my favorite part...and he's in the whole thing :)

i remember watching this movie in 5th grade music class! it was so awesome and all the girls loved christian bale back then. (umm i'm 24 now and i still love him) it has its corny moments, but the songs are great and it is just a feel-good, underdog kind of movie.

Despite the bad review I see written here for "Newsies", it has been one of our family's all time favorite movie. The singing and dancing had us all ready to see it over and over when we first were able to find it on VHS (no easy feat at the time)and after I was able to purchase the soundtrack, we sang at the top of our lungs in the car until we all knew all the songs by heart. The story line is fun and interesting to follow, the kids are great in the movie and it has a great ending. I'd love to see our local school do this on stage. I have this on VHS and DVD but want another copy in case something happens to ours.
