Before there was director
Steven Soderbergh's 2001 version, there was the original 1960 Ocean's 11 starring
Frank Sinatra,
Joey Bishop,
Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jr. This 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer looks bright and clean with only a few imperfections marring the image. While the flesh tones look well rendered, a small amount of edge enhancement shows up in a few scenes. However, the overall effect of this transfer is very good. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital Mono and sounds very much like a mono track should sound: flat and unimpressive. However, the bulk of this soundtrack is distortion free with only a slight hiss heard every now and then. Also included on this disc are English subtitles and Dolby French soundtrack.
This first-ever DVD edition of Ocean's 11 includes a few very well-produced extra features. The first is a commentary track by the lead actor's son, Frank Sinatra Jr., and actress
Angie Dickinson. The two participants were recorded at different times with the commentary then edited together. Frank Sinatra Jr. does the bulk of the talking while
Angie Dickinson chimes in once in a blue moon. Overall, this is an interesting commentary with lots of stories shared about "the Rat Pack" and their antics in Las Vegas. The "Las Vegas Casino Map" is a great feature that gives some tidbits and history about the five hotels featured in the film. An interesting clip from
Frank Sinatra hosting The Tonight Show in the 1970s is included in a very scratched-up full-frame presentation. Finally, there are two theatrical trailers for the film presented in anamorphic widescreen. This is a very nice edition of the film for anyone interested in the 1960s, highballs, or gambling their nights away. ~ Patrick Naugle, All Movie Guide
