The second Dirty Harry movie, Magnum Force concerns itself with a vigilante group that has targeted notorious scofflaws for extermination. When a prominent gang boss or drug-runner is set free by the airheaded liberal courts, a covert group of "avengers" is soon on hand to blow the miscreant to bits. While detective Dirty Harry Callahan (Clint Eastwood) is no great friend of civil liberties, he is dead set against wholesale murder as a solution to legal loopholes. Discovering that all the killings have been committed by the same weapon, Callahan reaches the conclusion that his on-the-edge partner, Charlie McCoy (Mitchell Ryan), is responsible. But the answer is less transparent than that, as Harry learns almost at the cost of his own life. Clint Eastwood returns as San Francisco detective "Dirty" Harry Callahan in the hit sequel Magnum Force. Warner has done a decent job on this 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer. While there is a small amount of grain and dirt during the feature, overall the color schemes and fleshtones look even, bright, and natural. Some digital artifacting pulses in here and there, though overall this is a relatively nice-looking picture. Audio is presented in a newly remixed 5.1 soundtrack that is more impressive than one might suspect. A good deal of surround sounds are used in the rear speakers, though the bulk of the soundtrack tends to come from the center and front speakers. All aspects of the dialogue, effects, and music are clear and free of any excessive distortion or hiss. The extra features included on this disc are somewhat light, including an eight-minute promotional featurette titled "Hero Cop: Yesterday and Today." This featurette includes some historical accounts on the series as well as some footage from the making of the film.
