DVD Synopsis

Based on Bram Stoker's classic 1897 novel, this film from Francis Ford Coppola and screenwriter James Victor Hart offers a full-blooded portrait of the immortal Transylvanian vampire. The major departure from Stoker is one of motivation as Count Dracula (Gary Oldman) is motivated more by romance than by bloodlust. He punctures the necks as a means of avenging the death of his wife in the 15th century, and when he comes to London, it is specifically to meet heroine Mina Harker (Winona Ryder), the living image of his late wife (Ryder plays a dual role, as do several of her costars). Anthony Hopkins is obsessed vampire hunter Van Helsing, while Keanu Reeves takes on the role of Jonathan Harker, and Tom Waits plays bug-eating Renfield. Bram Stoker's Dracula was the winner of three Academy Awards. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

As part of their Superbit line of high-performance DVDs, Columbia-TriStar Home Entertainment has re-released director Francis Ford Coppola's wildly kinetic version of Bram Stoker's Dracula. But unlike the previous disc release this version contains no extras, just the film itself. But for quality, there really is no comparison. From appearances this print seems to be the same one used for the earlier disc, but the picture resolution and sound are a definite improvement. Nevertheless, grain is still apparent in some scenes (especially during the opening moments) and the colors are not as vibrant or striking as when the film was released onto laserdisc by the Criterion Collection. But until Criterion releases their version of this controversial interpretation of the classic vampire novel, this disc will have to do. The film is offered in its proper theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1 (enhanced) and has been given the Dolby Digital 5.1 treatment. The soundtrack is superb and perfectly showcases this film's imaginative and lively sound design for the home environment. So crank it up and let the darkness wash over you! ~ Derek Hill, All Movie Guide
