DVD Synopsis
Innokenty Smotkunovsky essays the title role in the Russian production Tchaikovsky (released in some areas as Tchaikowski). Avoiding the erotic sensationalism of Kenneth Russell's The Music Lovers, the film illustrates how Tchaikovsky's life and work were virtually one in the same. Among the many highlights are the re-creations of the composer's ballets, brilliantly performed by Maya Plisetskaya. Hollywood-based composer Dmitri Tiomkin who arranged the music for Tchaikovsky and the picture itself earned Academy Award nominations. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Igor Talankin's sweeping biopic of composer Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky comes to DVD with a widescreen transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. Russian, English, and French soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1. Subtitles in over ten different languages are accessible. Supplemental materials include interviews with the lead actors, a mini-biography of Tchaikovsky, a featurette on the film's cinematographer, filmographies, and production stills. This is an excellent disc from Kino that should appeal especially to classical music enthusiasts. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide
