DVD Synopsis
Gina Prince-Bythewood's adaptation of Sue Monk Kidd's novel -The Secret Life of Bees stars Dakota Fanning as Lily, a 14-year-old growing up in a small Southern town in 1964. She is haunted by memories of shooting her mother when she was a young girl. Lily lives with her emotionally distant father, and her best friend is their African-American housekeeper Rosaleen (Jennifer Hudson). After locals beat Rosaleen for attempting to register as a voter, and Lily's dad goes one step too far during an argument with his daughter, Lily and Rosaleen set out to find the place where the only picture Lily has of her mother was taken. That place turns out to be the home of the independent Boatwright sisters, a trio -- Queen Latifah, Sophie Okonedo, and Alicia Keys -- who make a very successful living producing honey. Lily and her friend move in with them, and soon the girl learns about both beekeeping and life. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide
Wow, this movie is actually better than the book! I was so deeply moved by the abuse and sadness in the book that I was afraid to watch the movie. It was very faithful to the book, but told the story with less fear and pain, although all the bad stuff in it really still did happen. One of the rare times I have liked a movie better than a book.

This movie is great. Its the story of a young girl whom has lost her mother at a very young age. She doesn't remember much of her mother. Her father is very strict and mean to her. The only mother like figure she has is a lady whom works for her father. Her and the worker leave the town. They come across these three sisters and wind up staying with them. This story is about finding a place where you belong. A place where there is love. A place where you have people you can call family. I loved this movie. The acting was well done and i loved the story.

Better than expected -- I did not know Alicia Keys was in it until halfway thru the film -- she really CAN act! Dakota Fanning is the thread that keeps the film together. Pretty much a "chick flick," though, as my sons and hubby were not as enthusiastic as I was.
