DVD Synopsis

Three generations of method acting giants unite for this crime thriller written by Kario Salem and directed by Frank Oz. Robert De Niro stars as Nick Wells, an aging thief whose specialty is safecracking and who is on the verge of retiring to a life of ease, running his jazz club and romancing his girlfriend Diane (Angela Bassett). But before he can ride off into the sunset, Nick is pressured to do one last job by his mentor and business partner, a flamboyant and extravagant upscale fence named Max (Marlon Brando). Max is plotting the heist of the Montreal Customs House, and he's got a man on the inside, Jackie Teller (Edward Norton), a talented but volatile crook who has managed to ingratiate himself with the facility's staff as a fellow employee suffering from cerebral palsy. Jackie bristles at Nick's interference in "his" score, however, and threatens violence when it seems he's going to be cut out of the action. In the meantime, Nick grows increasingly ill at ease about the operation, as it violates his two most important dictums in thievery: always work alone and never pull a job in your own city. The part of Max in The Score was written specifically for Brando by screenwriter Salem, although the improvisational star and his director Oz reportedly clashed during filming. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

Critically acclaimed actors Marlon Brando, Robert DeNiro, Angela Bassett, and Edward Norton team up for the first time in director Frank Oz's heist movie The Score. This 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer looks excellent, displaying a wealth of richness and depth that should please fans. The colors feature a very nice hue with the black levels looking even and solid. Only the slightest amount of edge enhancement is spotted in a few scenes, though this shouldn't detract from the viewer's enjoyment of the film. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 in English as well as Dolby 2.0 in English and French. The 5.1 soundtrack is very well-mixed with the surround feature utilized during some key moments in the film. However, while this is a very well-produced track, the bulk of the film is generally dialogue-driven and somewhat subdued. All aspects of the music, effects, and dialogue are crystal clear and free of any distortion. Also included on this disc are English subtitles. Paramount has included a few well-done supplements on this edition of =The Score, starting off with a commentary track by director Frank Oz. The director talks in-depth about what it was like to work with his talented and famous actors, and how he wanted to make the movie "something different." A 12-minute "Making of the Score" featurette is a very light piece that includes interviews with actors Edward Norton, Robert DeNiro, and Angela Bassett, as well as director Frank Oz. Finally, there are some only mildly entertaining alternative/deleted scenes, one with a jazz performance by legend Mose Allison, as well as a non-anamorphic theatrical trailer for the film. ~ Patrick Naugle, All Movie Guide

Deniro and Ed Norton as Con-men. Awesome action sequences. Will have you on the edge of your couch. Deniro was one of the best con-men and Norton tries to get him in on one huge final heist. Great acting of Norton as a mentally challenged person in one part. Will they make the score or will they get busted? Watch and find out.
