DVD Synopsis

Frustrated with the Walt Disney studio's reluctance to produce full-length animated films, Don Bluth and a number of animators left the studio in the early '80s with the intent of creating movies in the style of Disney's classics. The Secret of NIMH is the first film Bluth produced after leaving the studio. Adapted from Robert C. O'Brien's acclaimed children's book Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of N.I.M.H., the film is about a widowed mouse whose home is threatened; also, one of her children is gravely ill. On her way to find help, she discovers NIMH, a secret society of highly-intelligent rats who have escaped from a nearby science lab. Editorial Review of DVD

Don Bluth's adaptation of the children's literature classic The Secret of NIMH comes to DVD with a standard full-frame 1.33:1 transfer. The closed-captioned English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital Stereo. English and French subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include the original theatrical trailer. The best feature is the eight-page booklet that includes a simplified look at the animation process to show children the work involved in producing the film. A great story, with a comical storyline for both children and adults. Teaches children that love and determination win out over evil. Dom DeLuise is in rare form as the crow Jeremy who befriends her. Mrs. Brisby's son is ill with pneumonia and needs the help of the rats on the farm to save her son's life. During this quest, she learns that her late husband and several rats were experimented upon years ago at a place called NIMH ("National Institute of Mental Health) giving them higher intellectual powers. The rats wish to leave the farmland to become independent, yet their plans are thwarted when a few rebel rats with more selfish goals interfere. These storylines intertwine, yet it is Mrs. Brisby who learns that her love and courage really can conquer all.
