DVD Synopsis

Loosely inspired by the true story of the heavy metal band Judas Priest, this music industry fable from director Stephen Herek is based on a script by actor-turned-writer/director John Stockwell. Mark Wahlberg stars as Chris Cole, a wannabe rock star who works by day as a copy machine repairman and by night as the lead singer of Blood Pollution, a Pennsylvania tribute band that imitates the best-selling heavy metal rockers of Steel Dragon. Although he's supported by his girlfriend Emily (Jennifer Aniston), Chris is devastated when his friends kick him out of the band he founded. His humiliation doesn't last long, however, as Chris soon learns that he's been tapped to replace the lead singer of Steel Dragon, literally becoming a rock star overnight. Chris soon has everything he's ever wanted but is disappointed to discover that being a superstar isn't everything it's cracked up to be. Rock Star was produced under two other titles, "Metal God" and "So You Want to Be a Rock Star." ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

The DVD of Warner's Rock Star has a lot going for it, even with a few faults. The image, the strongest part of this disc, is simply amazing. Framed at 2.35:1, and anamorphic, it shows no flaws at all. As a matter of fact, this is one of those transfers that could possibly be better than the theatrical experience. Colors are vibrant, and since they are such a vital element to the film, they are always noticeable. The sound, a very robust 5.1 English track, is primarily centered upfront, with only a minimal use of the surrounds. Still, the track is strong, but sadly isn't what would be hoped for. Still, it shouldn't disappoint. As for the extra material, what is listed on the box is a bit misleading. Not that those supplements aren't there, they are just a little weaker than what it seems. The main point of interest is a commentary from director Stephen Herek. He does offer a good amount of information on the making of the film, but, unfortunately, there are significant gaps where he goes silent. As for the rest, they don't amount to much. A four-minute fluff piece with some brief interviews and behind-the-scenes shots, though of course welcome, isn't very much to go on and only leaves you wanting more. Beyond that is an entertaining music video from Everclear, the theatrical trailer, and filmographies for the two stars and director. ~ Trent Fordham, All Movie Guide
