DVD Synopsis

Filmmaker Terry Zwigoff, who enjoyed breakthrough success with his 1994 documentary Crumb, shifts gears as he examines the lives of two young women on the verge of leaving their adolescence behind in his first dramatic feature. Enid (Thora Birch) and Rebecca (Scarlett Johansson) are two close friends who've just graduated from high school, and are trying to decide what to do with their lives. Enid is a dark-haired arch cynic who is tired of living at home with her ineffectual dad (Bob Balaban) and his annoyingly perky girlfriend Maxine (Teri Garr), while Rebecca is prettier and a bit cheerier, but no more certain about her future. While the two girls have vague plans of getting an apartment together, they seem content to while away their summer hanging out and indulging in their shared infatuation with Josh (Brad Renfro), a friend from school who works at a convenience store and doesn't seem to be especially attracted to either of them. Enid discovers that in order to get her diploma, she'll have to take an additional class over the summer, where she winds up studying art with Roberta (Illeana Douglas), who is determined to encourage Enid's creative impulses, whether Enid likes it or not. More significantly, Enid meets Seymour (Steve Buscemi), a geeky record collector more than twice her age, and while they would seem to have little in common (and Rebecca thinks he's a creep), Enid discovers a kindred spirit in fellow misfit Seymour, who shares her disgust with the world around them, and a relationship begins to develop between the two. Ghost World is based on the award-winning graphic novel by comic artist Daniel Clowes, who also wrote the film's screenplay. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

Two misfit teenagers cause trouble and heartbreak during the summer of their high school graduation in the offbeat comedy Ghost World. MGM has put some well-placed effort into this 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer. The colors and black levels all look well rendered and bright with only the slightest amount of edge enhancement showing up during a few key scenes. No digital artifacting or shimmer is present anywhere in the image. By all means, this is a great-looking transfer. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 in English. The rear speakers kick in during a few scenes, though overall this is a relatively subdued track. All aspects of the dialogue, effects, and music are free and clear of any distortion or hiss. Also included on this disc are English, French, and Spanish subtitles. Ghost World includes a small array of extra features, starting with four deleted/alternate scenes presented in non-anamorphic widescreen. Each scene is somewhat humorous, though it's fairly obvious why they were cut from the final film. a 1965 music video by Gumnaam titled "Jaan Pechachaan Ho" is a very strange look at dance music from yesteryear, and a "Making of Ghost World" documentary includes behind-the-scenes footage as well as insightful interviews with cast members Thora Birch, Steve Buscemi, Bob Balaban, Illeana Douglas, Scarlett Johansson, Brad Renfro, and Teri Garr, director Terry Zwigoff, and writer/creator Daniel Clowes. Finally there are some theatrical trailers for Ghost World, the DVD releases of The Princess Bride and The Terminator, and a promotional spot for the soundtrack to Ghost World. ~ Patrick Naugle, All Movie Guide

If you enjoy oddball comedies, punk rock, blues, comic books, obsessive collecting, crazy art teachers R. Crumb or Steve Buscemi you NEED this film. A great adaptation of Dan Clowes’ graphic novel. For the bitter self-absorbed naive angst-ridden teen in all of us. A++

I have NO idea how this movie got such a high rating! 5 stars you got to be kidding! I fell asleep 5 times this movie was so boring. How could such good actors do such a bad movie?? To each his own I guess.
