Television actor-turned-director Brian Robbins follows up Varsity Blues (1999) and Ready to Rumble (2000) with another sports comedy. Keanu Reeves stars as Conor O'Neill, an underachiever and inveterate sports gambler who needs a bailout loan from a friend to pay off his mounting debt. As a condition for receiving the necessary funds, Conor is saddled with coaching a corporate-sponsored Little League baseball team for underprivileged youth in Chicago's notorious Cabrini Green housing project. Reluctant at first, Conor slowly begins to enjoy his new authority role, especially when he makes the acquaintance of his players' attractive teacher, Elizabeth Wilkes (Diane Lane). Children's baseball gets a new look in the Keanu Reeves sports vehicle Hardball. Paramount has done a great job at making sure this 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer looks clear of almost all defects or imperfections. With deep black levels and solid color schemes, this is an excellent looking image. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround in English. This soundtrack is very enveloping with directional effects used through both the front and rear speakers. Also included on this disc are Dolby 2.0 Surround tracks in English and French, as well as English subtitles. =Hardball includes a vast array of extra features, starting with a commentary track by director Brian Robbins and writer John Gatins. This commentary track is very informative (the director has a lot to say on the production), if a bit dry. "The Making of Hardball" is a basic short promo spot for the film that features interviews with the cast and crew. Three deleted scenes are included that were justifiably left on the cutting room floor. Finally, there are some commercials, a theatrical trailer for the film, and the music video "Hardball" by Lil Bow Wow, Lil' Wayne, Lil Zane, and Sammie. ~ Patrick Naugle, All Movie Guide
