DVD Synopsis

Robert Redford stars in this action drama as General Irwin, a respected three-star tactician whose career ends in disgrace when he's court-martialed and sent to The Castle, a maximum security military prison. Irwin quickly butts heads with the facility's autocratic warden, Colonel Winter (James Gandolfini), who runs his command with an iron fist, even killing prisoners when he deems it necessary. Irwin rallies his fellow convicts into a rag-tag army and leads them in a revolt against Winter, an action that the warden is ready to repel by violent means. Mark Ruffalo, Robin Wright Penn, and Delroy Lindo co-star in this Dreamworks production, the third feature film from one-time film critic Rod Lurie. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

Robert Redford stars in the compelling military drama The Last Castle. Dreamworks has done a very presentable job on this 2.40:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer. While a small amount of edge halo shows up in a few key scenes, the bulk of this transfer's colors are very vivid and bright with deep, dark black levels. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround in English and French, as well as DTS Surround in English. Each of these soundtracks are very full and clean with no distortion or hiss present. The front and rear speakers are utilized during many scenes with a spacious feeling throughout. Also featured on this disc are English and Spanish subtitles. The Last Castle includes some well-produced supplements, starting with a commentary track by director Rod Lurie. The director provides lots of information on the script, the shoot, and the performances. An "HBO First Look" featurette is a light piece on the making of the film. Nine deleted scenes are included with or without the director's commentary in anamorphic widescreen. Finally there is a theatrical trailer for the film, some cast and crew information, and some production notes on the making of the film. ~ Patrick Naugle, All Movie Guide

WE have seen this over and over and enjoyed it every time. Robert Redford is the quintessential hero in this story chronicling the cruel and sadistic behavior of a prison warden. The cast of extras and smaller roles is superb.
