DVD Synopsis

A variation on the "buddy-cop" hybridized genre, 48 HRS. greatly bolstered the career of Nick Nolte and made comedian Eddie Murphy a bonafide box-office sensation. When a pair of reckless cop-killers break out of prison, grizzled detective Jack Cates (Nolte) is left no alternative but to spring fast-talking hustler Reggie Hammond (Murphy) from the penitentiary in order to find the criminals. The catch: the pair only have 48 hours to complete their assignment before Hammond must return to prison. Naturally, the two despise each other and even engage in fisticuffs, but eventually the danger facing them proves a strong enough common bond for them to play on the same team, and even achieve a little mutual admiration. ~ Jeremy Beday, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

Walter Hill's action comedy 48 Hrs. is the film that made wisecracking Eddie Murphy a movie star overnight, and was also a shot in the arm for co-star Nick Nolte's career. This Paramount DVD is an adequate representation of the film, although it offers a weak selection of special features. Even though the widescreen transfer of the movie is not anamorphic, the picture quality on this disc is still very high, showcasing Hill's talent for injecting life and color into dark and grimy cityscapes. The Dolby Digital 5.1 Sound has similar vitality and is most effective during the film's thunderous action sequences. The only supplemental feature on this DVD is the original theatrical trailer, and the disc is hurt by the complete absence of any background on what is, after all, still an incredibly likeable and popular film. As one would expect, it's far better than any videotape of 48 Hrs. could ever hope to be, but still an underachiever in DVD terms. ~ Patrick Lee, All Movie Guide
