DVD Synopsis

The moodily evocative docudrama T-Men stars Dennis O'Keefe as Dennis O'Brien, a treasury agent determined to bring a counterfeiting ring to justice. O'Brien and his partner Tony Genaro (Alfred Ryder) go undercover to gain the confidence of the ruthless Detroit mob responsible for the phony money. The plot, compelling though it is, takes second place to the film's stylish set pieces, superbly directed by Anthony Mann and brilliantly photographed by John Alton. Among the film's most famous moments is the scene in which two-bit hood Wallace Ford is bumped off in a steam bath by sadistic hood Charles McGraw, not to mention the harrowing vignette wherein O'Keefe, posing as a crook, must stand by silently as his partner Ryder is murdered. One of the finest examples of the film noir form, T-Men proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that a film didn't need to have a lush budget, brilliant Technicolor and Clark Gable to score a hit with postwar moviegoers. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

This exciting Anthony Mann film noir is one of the meanest, toughest and bleakest of the bunch. It's also one of the best. Again filmed by famed cinematographer John Alton in a pseudo-documentary style, this police procedural presages later neo-noirs such as The French Connection and To Live and Die in L.A. (both directed by William Friedkin), as well as countless lesser crime films over the years. If you've never seen an Anthony Mann film noir, this is a fine place to start. You may also want to check out his other classic noirs, He Walked by Night and Raw Deal (the latter of which is available from VCI). As with VCI Home Entertainment's disc for Raw Deal, T-Men is offered in a full-screen aspect ratio and with its original English language mono soundtrack. Both picture and sound are fine. The disc also comes with excellent video "liner notes" from award-winning crime writer and filmmaker, Max Allan Collins, who dishes up some informative anecdotes about the making of the film, as well as why director Mann matters so much when it comes to noir. Also included on the disc are some theatrical trailers for some other classic noir films. ~ Derek Hill, All Movie Guide
