Anthony Mann's tough-as-nails
Raw Deal is pure noir. From its twisted psychosexual storyline to its startling deep-focus black & white cinematography by the legendary
John Alton,
Raw Deal oozes animalistic violence, aggression, angst and sex, baby. Many film noir aficionados consider this film to be
Mann's best venture into the genre, which is saying a lot since
Mann also directed the action-packed
T-Men (also available on DVD from VCI) and co-directed the superb
He Walked by Night, a not-to-be-missed police procedural. VCI Home Entertainment's disc serves up the no-nonsense digital goods nicely. The film is offered in its proper full-screen aspect ratio and in its original English language mono soundtrack. The picture looks fine and has been cleaned up, although some wear and tear is understandably present. The soundtrack is also acceptable. The disc also comes with excellent video "liner notes" from author and filmmaker
Max Allan Collins, who details why
Raw Deal matters and why it has maintained its stature as one of the meanest original noirs. Trailers for other film noir offerings are also included. ~ Derek Hill, All Movie Guide
