DVD Synopsis

A gunslinging con man develops a tricky scheme to make a killing at a major poker tournament in this comic Western inspired by the popular television show. Mel Gibson assumes the role of Bret Maverick, the handsome rogue who hopes to cheat his way to success. In need of a large stake to enter a major card competition on a Louisiana steamboat, Maverick decides to take advantage of a few small-town poker players. These include the seemingly sweet Annabelle Bransford (Jodie Foster) and the intimidating Angel (Alfred Molina), neither of whom is too happy about their loss. Things become even more complicated for Maverick when the law gets involved, with Marshal Zane Cooper (James Garner, who played the role of Maverick in the original television series) giving chase. A series of stagecoach chases, complicated cons, and gun battles ensues, with Annabelle and Maverick finding time for plenty of flirtation along the way. ~ Judd Blaise, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

Richard Donner's big-screen adaptation of the low-key Western series Maverick comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. English and French soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital Surround. There are neither subtitles nor closed-captions on this release. Supplemental materials are limited to production notes. The film's easy charm comes through on the small screen just as easily as it did in theaters. Fans of the film will be satisfied with the picture and sound on this otherwise bare-bones release. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide

this is a great movie. it's funny, too. you have this young man (mel gibson) on a crusade to get enough money to play poker on a river boat. a game is coming up with a fantastic reward to the winner. and you've got jodie foster, who is a prostitute with quite a clever mind, figuring out ways to take gibson's and garner's money, or any money, for that matter. there is a part that you will kick off your socks laughing at that has graham green (the "quiet one," the indian in "dances with wolves") appearing in it, as a native american hired by this rich russian to show him how to hunt like a native american and other things that are indian, but who he is milking dry. the russian ends up being on the river boat for the big game too. i'm not going to tell you what happens at that game, but granted, it's fun and funny. this really is a gem.
