Ione Skye plays Diane Court, high-school valedictorian on the verge of heading to England on a prestigious scholarship. This is especially thrilling to Diane's divorced father, James (John Mahoney), who has always shared a special relationship with the girl, less father/daughter than friend/friend. When Diane begins dating irresponsible army brat Lloyd Dobler (John Cusack), her father despairs at her choice of an "underachiever." Pressured by her dad to break off the relationship, Diane spends the rest of the summer being pursued by the lovestruck Lloyd, who does everything he can to win her back. Director Cameron Crowe's love letter to the angst of teenage romance, Say Anything comes to DVD in a very presentable edition from Fox. This is a very sharp looking 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer that features dark black levels, detailed colors, and eye-pleasing fleshtones. While a small amount of grain and edge enhancement are present in the picture, overall, this is a great-looking image. The audio is presented in a newly created Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack in English, as well as Dolby 2.0 Surround in English and French. Most of this 5.1 soundtrack is focused toward the front and center speakers with only the music coming through all of the channels. While this isn't the most aggressive mix ever created, it works very well in the confines of the film. Also included on this disc are English and Spanish subtitles. Fox has put its fair share of work into the DVD supplements, starting with an exceptionally good commentary track by director Cameron Crowe and actors John Cusack and Ione Skye. Before this track begins, there's a 20-minute introduction by the director and actors, each recounting stories and memories on the production of the film. Nearly 50 minutes of deleted/extended/alternate footage is included that features a lot of cut material as well as some sequences that were trimmed down in the final edit of the film. Some of this material is redundant, while other scenes are absolute gems. Finally, there is a short featurette on the making of the film, two theatrical trailers, eight TV spots, and a quick photo gallery featuring stills from the film. All in all, this is a great package for fans of this touching and now classic love story. ~ Patrick Naugle, All Movie Guide
