This drama about affluent Los Angeles teens is taken from the novel by Bret Easton Ellis. Clay (Andrew McCarthy) is a college freshman who returns home during Christmas break. Clay's old flame Blair (Jamie Gertz) is now more interested in her new beau Julian (Robert Downey, Jr.), the fun-loving party boy with a penchant for drugs. While Clay tries to rekindle a thing with Blair, Julian becomes addicted to cocaine and starts freebasing. Julian's friends try halfheartedly to intervene, with no success. Soon he is so far in debt to drug dealer Rip (James Spader) that Julian becomes a male prostitute, whoring for enough money for his next fix. Michael Bowen co-stars with Tony Bill and Nicholas Pryor in this trip into the seamy world of darkness in sunny California. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide

Robert Downey Jr. stars in the movie adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis' famous '80s book -Less Than Zero. Fox has done a respectable job on this 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer. Aside of a few instances of grain and dirt, this is a decent looking transfer that sports bright colors and vivid black levels. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 4.0 Surround in English, as well as Dolby 2.0 Surround in English and Dolby 2.0 Mono in French. The 4.0 soundtrack works very well in the confines of the film, though it's not overly impressive or bombastic. The directional effects are sadly kept to the bare minimum. All aspects of the soundtrack are clear of any distortion or hiss. Also included on this disc are English and Spanish subtitles. The extra features on this edition of Less Than Zero are pretty slim, including three theatrical trailers and five TV spots, as well as a few other trailers for some other Fox movies. ~ Patrick Naugle, All Movie Guide
