DVD Synopsis

John Travolta stars in this thriller as divorced husband and father Frank Morrison, a boat builder concerned about his son Danny (Matthew O'Leary), a troubled 11-year-old who has shown a tendency to lie since his parents broke up. When his ex-wife Susan (Teri Polo) announces that she's getting remarried to Rick Barnes (Vince Vaughn), a recent arrival in town and a popular, wealthy philanthropist, Frank struggles with jealousy but feels that Rick might be a stabilizing influence for his son. When Danny begins relating unsettling stories about Rick, Frank at first chalks it up to youthful rebellion, but when Danny stridently claims to have witnessed his new stepfather committing murder, Frank's instincts tell him the story is true. As he investigates the new man in his family's life, Frank uncovers alarming facts about Rick, who's not the man he appears to be. Domestic Disturbance (2001) made headlines six months before its release when co-star Steve Buscemi, accompanied by Vaughn and screenwriter Scott Rosenberg, was stabbed and seriously injured in an after-hours bar brawl with locals near the film's North Carolina set. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

John Travolta must protect his family at all costs in the tense thriller Domestic Disturbance. Paramount has done a nice job on this 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer. This is a very clear image that features sparkling colors and deep, dark black levels. Aside of a few instances of edge enhancement near the end, this picture looks very pleasing to the eye. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround in English as well as Dolby 2.0 Surround in French and English. The 5.1 soundtrack features an array of directional effects and sounds that are filtered through both the front and rear speakers. Paramount has put a considerable amount of work into making sure that this mix is very aggressive and full. Also included on this disc are English subtitles. While =Domestic Disturbance may not be considered a full-blown special edition, it does include a few well-produced extra features starting with a commentary track by director Harold Becker. Sadly, this commentary is fairly dry with only a few truly insightful tidbits given into the making of the film. Six deleted scenes with optional commentary by the director are presented in non-anamorphic widescreen and actually may have helped the final film if they would have been left in. Finally, there are some storyboards for two different sequences in the movie and a theatrical trailer for the film. ~ Patrick Naugle, All Movie Guide

This is actually not a bad film. It has elements of The Stepfather in it (which Vaughn pulls off flawlessly). Do not judge this movie by the remake of Psycho. Where Psycho left you feeling disappointed, this movie, while not a raging success and aging classic, holds enough in true entertainment value to keep your attention and satisfy any need to have an anti-chick flick night.
I'm not proclaiming this to be a phenomenal film, because it isn't, but when you have watched all the DVD's on your shelf more than five times, slip this one in. Just see if Vaughn's performance does not creep you out, whether marginally or completely. I'd love to see him in more dangerous roles or villain-like roles, because the man can hold a threat of danger in his eyes as few actors are able!

Boy, Vince Vaughn, do u EVER clean up nicely!

The house where this takes place is to die for; Vaughn shows his true acting talent and John Travolta once again NEVER disappoints. I have never seen an actor get into character as well as John.

A fast moving, gribbing story of love at its best.
