DVD Synopsis

After the long-delayed Town and Country, director Peter Chelsom turns in his second 2001 effort with this love-at-first-sight romantic comedy that revolves around fate, destiny, and chance. Jonathan (John Cusack) and Sara (Kate Beckinsale) are two New Yorkers already in relationships when they meet one another, each reaching for the last pair of cashmere gloves at a department store. Over coffee, they strike up an intimate conversation, and Jonathan thinks they should see each other again. Unconvinced, Sara arranges an elaborate series of "fate" games; if they're meant to be together, she reasons, she and Jonathan will receive some sort of sign in the future. Flash forward several years, and the two are at opposite ends of the country -- Jonathan in New York and Sara in San Francisco, both engaged to be married. Still, neither can shake the memory of their chance encounter, and they both enlist their best friends (Molly Shannon and Jeremy Piven) to help them find their true love again. Serendipity had its Gala World Premiere at the 2001 Toronto Film Festival. ~ Michael Hastings, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

It's no fortunate accident that fans of Serendipity will enjoy this bonus-packed DVD. The film is presented in anamorphic widescreen 1.85:1 format (all the better to catch the numerous close encounters) with a Dolby Digital 5.1 English or French soundtrack and Spanish subtitles. Sneak previews of the Serendipity soundtrack, Bounce, About Adam, and Bridget Jones's Diary get their commercial play on this disc. The bonus materials are led by ten deleted scenes that can be viewed with or without the director's commentary. A number of enjoyable cuts are found here, including a first kiss between John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale early in the film. A still gallery and story board comparison (the golf scene with Beckinsale and Molly Shannon) give a unique on-the-set perspective. Also included is the theatrical trailer, feature commentary track with director Peter Chelsom, and a Starz/Encore featurette that gives a behind-the-scenes look at the film along with cast and crew interviews. Most interesting is drector Peter Chelsom's on-set diary. The detailed entries make interesting reading and share choice tidbits of information (such as Central Park was plagued with the West Nile Virus just as they were to begin shooting). The only thing missing from this package is a bloopers and outtakes reel. Snippets are shown here and there, but with the comedic talents of Cusack, Shannon, Jeremy Piven, and Eugene Levy, there's sure to be countless laughs left out. Ignoring that unfortunate omission, Serendipity's DVD should leave fans of this fateful romantic comedy with a smile. ~ Terri Clark, All Movie Guide

I really liked this movie. Had a great storyline to it, very sweet.

"If something can go wrong, it will." This movie will have you groaning because of all the near-misses, but you'll be rooting for both characters to have another "fortunate accident". A feel good movie that would be EXTRA good to watch around the holidays...

Had it not been for the Beckinsale character's inexplicable insistence on making things difficult, the two main characters would have gotten together at the end of the first 20 minutes. Classic example of Ebert's Idiot Plot.
