Originally released in the early days of DVD,
Jerry Maguire had great sound and picture, but nothing more. The release of this two-disc special edition has certainly changed that and the lack of extras on the first release is made up in droves. The first disc, with the movie, has a commentary track with director
Cameron Crowe and stars
Tom Cruise,
Renée Zellweger, and Cuba Gooding Jr. The second disc, though, has the wealth of supplemental features. Here the movie is presented again, but in a smaller box with a video commentary of the four participants. It's the same commentary as the first disc, and while entertaining to watch them interact, there are far too many dry spells. Obviously they enjoy just watching the movie again. The remainder of the extras on the second disc are plentiful, including deleted scenes and rehearsal footage (both with optional commentary), a made-up shoe commercial with "Rod Tidwell," a
Bruce Springsteen music video, photo gallery, theatrical trailers, and a brief featurette with cast and crew interviews. As for picture and sound, they're impeccable. The 1.85:1 image is representational of the theatrical experience with nicely saturated colors and solid, deep blacks. The 5.1 Dolby Digital track is also impressive, with just the right amount of surround material and clean, distinct use of the all important front speakers. Dialogue is clear and never distorted. All in all, this special edition is equal to most produced, in all respects. ~ Trent Fordham, All Movie Guide
