Spanish filmmaker Alejandro Amenábar's first English-language production is a creepy period ghost story that continues in the vein of his earlier art house hit Open Your Eyes (1997). Nicole Kidman stars as Grace, a devoutly religious mother of two ailing children who has moved with her family to a mansion on the English coast while awaiting her husband's return from World War II, though he has been declared missing. Their children, Anne (Alakina Mann) and Nicholas (James Bentley), both suffer from a rare photosensitivity disease that renders them extremely vulnerable to sunlight, prompting Grace's rule of having only one door open in the house at a time. When Anne begins claiming to see ghosts, Grace at first believes her newly arrived family of eccentric servants to be responsible, but chilling events and visions soon lead her to believe that something supernatural is indeed going on. The Others was released only a few months prior to Vanilla Sky (2001), the American remake of Alejandro's Open Your Eyes (1997), ironically starring Kidman's then-estranged husband Tom Cruise. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

Nicole Kidman stars with both humans and ghosts in the chilling horror hit The Others. Dimension has done a fine job of making sure that this 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer appears free of any defects or blemishes. The color patterns appear very bright and natural while the black levels are spot on and dark. The audio is presented on Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround in English and French. This 5.1 mix is very effective as it utilizes a ton of creepy, atmospheric sounds in both the front and rear speakers to scare the viewer silly. Also included on this disc are English and Spanish subtitles. This two-disc "Collector's Series" sports a few meaty extra features, though not as many as some fans might wish. The first feature, titled "A Look Inside: The Others," is a 22-minute featurette on the making of the film, its success, and what the cast and crew thinks of how it all came together. "Xeroderma Pigmentosum" is a look at a child suffering from this rare disease (an allergic reaction to bright sunlight). This is an emotional and very poignant feature, and the best on this set. "An Intimate Look at Director Alejandro Amenábar" includes nine minutes of on-the-set footage of the director working with the cast. Finally, there is a five-minute effects piece on the production of the special effects, a still gallery with about 40 behind-the-scenes images, a theatrical trailer for the film, and bonus trailers for other Dimension titles. ~ Patrick Naugle, All Movie Guide
