DVD Synopsis

Burt Lancaster stars as Lou, an aging mob flunkey, barely making a living in Atlantic City. Susan Sarandon plays Sally, a casino croupier whose husband Dave (Robert Joy) steals a large supply of drugs from the mob. When he is killed, the narcotics pass to the unwilling Sally. Lou, in the midst of longtime affair with middle-aged gangster's widow Grace (Kate Reid), falls for the much younger Sally, becoming her savior by killing the mob thugs sent to shut her up. The killings serve a therapeutic value for Lou, proving that he hasn't lost his old panache. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

Both a winning character study and a realistic genre movie, this Paramount DVD release of Atlantic City shows that the film has not only held up very well, but is a modern classic. Besides being French director Louis Malle's best American movie by far, it also features what may be Burt Lancaster's most sensitive and naturalistic performance as an old-time numbers runner who lives in a past that never was. Both Malle and Lancaster have sadly passed and the disc does not offer an audio commentary, but the widescreen anamorphic transfer is excellent and showcases Richard Ciupka's beautiful camera work. Oddly, given the high quality of his work on Atlantic City, the movie has been one of the only opportunities to shoot a quality film that Ciupka has had. The Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono audio track is well-balanced, but don't expect to be dazzled by a monophonic soundtrack from 1980. ~ Nick Dedina, All Movie Guide

Timothy W. (BASEBALLNUT) from NEW ALBANY, IN wrote on 10/10/2009...

True classic, the typical Louis Malle formula works, desperate characters in desperate situations in a gritty format. You cannot beat the casting of Susan Sarandon and Burt Lancaster. Highly recommended, the way movies are suppose to be made. 10 of 10 for the directing of Louis Malle, a cinematic legend.
