DVD Synopsis

In this biting comedy satirizing Hollywood cynicism from writer-director Blake Edwards, Felix Farmer (Richard Mulligan) is a motion picture director whose career is on the skids. Having just completed a family musical that is sure to be a $30 million flop, Felix knows that his days are numbered and tries unsuccessfully to commit suicide. When he recovers, Felix suddenly has a brainstorm and hatches a scheme to buy the film back from his studio and lens new scenes that will turn it into a pornographic movie with big stars, a sure-fire box office winner. In order to pull it off, he'll need to convince his female lead and wife, Sally Miles (Julie Andrews, not coincidentally the director's real-life wife) to defy her wholesome, squeaky-clean public image by baring her breasts on film. S.O.B. (1981) was the final film of legendary actor William Holden. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

The Warner Bros. DVD release of Blake Edwards' classic comedy-drama S.O.B. has little to offer in the way of bonus material, but does a reasonably good job of preserving this film. The sharply detailed anamorphic image restores the film to its full 2.35:1 widescreen glory, which is quite important since Edwards' screen compositions make full use of the widescreen frame (especially during the film's slapstick set pieces). The audio is limited to Dolby Digital Mono, which delivers an acceptable soundtrack, but often sounds a bit undermixed in the film's purely dialogue-driven scenes. A stereo remix would have probably been a big help in this department. In terms of supplements, =S.O.B. is limited to a fairly entertaining trailer, a cast listing, and a skimpy credits list for Blake Edwards. Since Warner Bros. was able to get commentaries for their other Edwards-related releases like =Victor/Victoria and =Skin Deep, it's surprising that they didn't go the extra mile for what is possibly Edwards' most personal film. Despite this unfortunate lack of frills, Warner's DVD of S.O.B. remains the best way to see this film thanks to the quality of its visual transfer. ~ Donald Guarisco, All Movie Guide
