DVD Synopsis

Escape from L.A. finds Kurt Russell once again in the role of Snake, which he played in the 1981 film, Escape from New York. Los Angeles has finally had the really big earthquake everyone was afraid of, and what remains is now an island. Because the country's ultra-righteous President-for-Life (Cliff Roberton) wants it that way, all the weirdos and freaks that previously inhabited New York in large numbers, and the rest of the U.S. in smaller concentrations, have been quarantined on the island of L.A. The president has Snake taken from the nice, decent prison he was living in for a special mission in L.A. The president's daughter has joined the resistance movement determined to overthrow his one-man rule, and has stolen his secret "black box" (a doomsday machine) to boot. Snake is given a poison which will kill him in a few hours unless he returns to the president for the antidote. His mission is to recover the black box and kill the president's daughter. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell) is back in action on director John Carpenter's action flick Escape from L.A. Paramount's work on this non-anamorphic 2.35:1 widescreen transfer is decent, though not as good as it should have been. While the colors and black levels all appear fairly solid and dark, overall, there is a softness in the image that tends to be distracting when the film is playing. The soundtrack is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround in English, as well as Dolby 2.0 Surround in French and English. This mix is very bombastic and bass heavy, featuring a multitude of directional effects in both the front and rear channels. The soundtrack is also free of any excessive hiss or distortion. Also included on this disc are Spanish subtitles. The extra features on =Escape From L.A. are kept to the bare minimum -- the only supplement to be found here is a single theatrical trailer for the film. ~ Patrick Naugle, All Movie Guide

This is an example of what happens when filmmakers and artists want to relive their glory days and nobody has the courage to stand up and tell them it is a bad idea. Terrible movie, this one. The original was classic and iconic whereas this sequel is pure rehashed garbage. Avoid at all costs and re-watch Escape From New York instead.
