Andy Tennant directed this -Cinderella variant. The Brothers Grimm arrive at the home of a wealthy Grande Dame (Jeanne Moreau) who speaks of the many legends surrounding the fable of the cinder girl before telling the "true" story of her ancestor. In flashback, the story then focuses on eight-year-old Danielle, daughter of a wealthy widower, a 16th-century landowner. After returning to France with his new wife Rodmilla (Anjelica Huston) and her two daughters, he dies of a heart attack. Ten years later, Danielle (Drew Barrymore) is now treated as a servant by the trio. Fortunately, she has an encounter with Prince Henry (Dougray Scott), who is fleeing an arranged marriage. Later, when Danielle poses as a Lady, the Prince takes an interest in her. Inventor-artist Leonardo da Vinci (Patrick Godfrey), accepting the French court's patronage, offers advice to Prince Henry on matters of the heart. Up against seemingly impossible odds, Ever After managed to gain some critical acceptance upon its release and a cult audience of fairy tale enthusiasts. Given that it is one of the stronger examples of a genre film released by a major studio in the past couple of years (and a rare genre at that), one would think that it would be perfect for some impressive supplements. Not so. While it does feature a pristine 2.35:1 non-anamorphic transfer and a Dolby soundtrack, only a trailer is offered as bonus material. Considering all of the literary connections implied and even referenced specifically in the film (to the Brothers Grimm and the tradition of fairy tales and folk storytelling), the lack of any featurettes is unforgivable. Also, a film with such an elaborate look and production design should be fertile ground for a director's commentary, or storyboard and art design galleries, but nothing is found on the disc. Ever After may be a Cinderella story, but there's no prince that can save the DVD from a rental-only fate. ~ Oliver Thornton, All Movie Guide
