DVD Synopsis

After exploring the worlds of toys and bugs in the two Toy Story films and A Bug's Life, the award-winning computer animation company Pixar delves into the realm of monsters with its fourth feature. Hulking, blue-furred behemoth James P. "Sully" Sullivan (John Goodman) and his one-eyed assistant Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) are employed by Monsters, Inc., a scream processing factory. It seems that the denizens of their realm thrive on the screams of kids spooked by monsters lurking under their beds and in their closets. It's the job of Sully, Mike, and their co-workers, including sarcastic Randall Boggs (Steve Buscemi), crab-like CEO Henry J. Waternoose (James Coburn), and lovely snake-headed receptionist Celia (Jennifer Tilly) to keep the frights flowing. When Sully and Mike are followed back into the monster world by a very unafraid little human girl named Boo (Mary Gibbs), they are exiled to her universe, where they discover that such a modern-day mythological specimen as the Abominable Snowman is a fellow refugee. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

Disney and Pixar have proven that they're a great team when it comes to putting out well-made intelligent animated films (that happen to be geared to kids), Monsters, Inc. is certainly no exception. This super-packed 2-disc set has hours of monster-loving extras for the munchkins and the film experts in your household. On disc one, Disney smartly offers both a full screen version for the kids and a wide screen version in the original 1.85:1 theatrical aspect ratio for movie mavens that love to see everything the director intended. Additionally, audio aficionados have their choice of three sound options, Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround EX, a Surround EX sound effects only track, or a THX with THX optimizer option. Also on disc one is a commentary track with director Pete Docter, co-director Lee Unkrich, executive producer John Lasseter and executive producer and screenwriter Andrew Stanton. The fun stuff is all on disc 2, which is cleverly divided so you can explore the monster's world or the human's world. The monster's world is where you become an employee of "Monster, Inc." Roz welcomes you as you take a look at the history of Monstropolis, you can page through the employee handbook to learn about everything from Sample Scare Reports to the top 10 ways to get fired or learn ways to gain 10,000 pounds and much more. You'll also see the Monster of the Month Awards and learn more about Monster World and it's citizens. Continuing on, you can go on the job with Monster, Inc.'s most loveable scare-meisters Mike and Sulley, see their screen-tests for the film, abandoned concepts for the plot, get a guide to the "inside jokes," see a brand new animated short created just for the DVD release called "Mike's New Car" and much more. Hang-on there's even more, as you explore the human world. You'll be taken on a tour of Pixar's state-of-the-art animation studio as you see how Monsters, Inc. goes from an idea to storyboards to understanding how to expand the story, to the finished product allowing you to compare the storyboards to the finished film. You'll be guided on an exploration of how Monstropolis was created, see the "monster files" and how to make a "great" monster. In fact, you'll see aspects of animation, production design, music and sound concepts and of course, the theatrical trailers, toys, posters and anything else you can imagine. Not only is this film a creative and technical work of art, but the DVD is a must-have for anyone who loves movies. ~ Sharon McRill, All Movie Guide

We love this movie, the grown ups and my 4 year old daughter. In addition to great fast paced animation it has a slight girl power nuance as "Boo" finds a way to conquer her fear (and whack it on the head).

We were a tiny bit concerned about introducing this movie to our three-year-old, as it had yet to occur to him to be afraid of monsters in the closet or under the bed. But of course, that wasn't a problem, and this disc entered heavy rotation as his absolute favorite movie for over a month. Probably one of the best Pixar creations for the preschool set.
