Released in both movie-only and supplement-heavy Collector's Series editions, the DVD release of
Good Will Hunting features a 1.85:1 widescreen transfer of the film as well as Dolby Digital Sound. Neither edition is 16 x 9 enhanced, so the discs are left to complete on the basis of supplements. The Collector's Series version of the title is the better bet, boasting no less than 11 deleted scenes with commentary. The scenes range from inconsequential to essential, especially the original St. Patrick's Day opening and some scenes cut for time or continuity that add depth to the characters. The feature-length commentary benefits from the presence of
Matt Damon and
Ben Affleck, who add humor to an otherwise dry director commentary. The "Production Featurette," featuring interviews with the cast and crew, boils down the most important information offered during the commentary into an enjoyable -- if overly polished -- look behind the film. None of the remaining supplements (an unnecessary Academy Award Best Picture Montage," an
Elliott Smith music video, the theatrical trailer and TV spots, and some randomly assembled behind-the-scenes footage) have the substance of the other features. Overall, the Collector's Series disc succeeds as one of Miramax's better DVD titles. ~ Oliver Thornton, All Movie Guide
