DVD Synopsis

A man struggles to prove he isn't insane -- which is no mean feat when you're certain you're been transported 400 years into the future. Anne (Hope Davis) is a psychiatrist working at a hospital for the criminally insane whose latest charge is Bill Tyler (Denis Leary), a man who was recently admitted when he was found inside a wrecked truck found in a quarry. Bill isn't sure just where he is or what's happened to him, but he's certain he's traveled four centuries into the future, and if he can't find a way to get back to the past within 48 hours, assassins will execute him by lethal injection. Anne is bemused by Bill's odd story, but doesn't challenge him on it, instead questioning him in detail about everything he can recall about his past prior to being brought in. As Bill rants about lasers and holographic images, shares his periodic hallucinations, and discusses his feelings about his family and his former girlfriend, he becomes increasingly lucid, and Anne has to figure out how much of Bill's story is fantasy, and how much is fact. Final was written by Bruce McIntosh, who based the script on his own stage play; the feature (shot on digital video) was directed by actor Campbell Scott. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

Campbell Scott directs the taught thriller Final. Presented in 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen, this transfer appears to be in very fine form. Besides a small amount of pixilation and edge enhancement, this is a pleasing image that features bright, detailed colors and solid black levels. The soundtrack is presented in Dolby Digital Stereo in English. While Final surely would have benefited from a thorough 5.1 mix, this Stereo presentation does an apt job without a hint of any hiss or distortion. Also included on this disc are Spanish and English subtitles. Fans looking for insight into the making of the movie should look someplace else -- the only extra features available on this disc are a theatrical trailer for the film and a few bonus trailers for other Lion's Gate movies. ~ Patrick Naugle, All Movie Guide

Kendra M. (KendraM) from NASHVILLE, TN wrote on 2/4/2008...

Coincidentally, I watched Resolution #9 a few days prior to watching this one. That movie showed a man descending into paranoia-- believing everyone is out to get him and conspiring against him for some type of experiment. This one also has a hero in a similar situation. However, here, there is doubt as to whom to believe.

Denis Leary is great in this role and the movie is interesting, although it's not a perfect film by any means.

He wakes up one morning in a mental hospital believing it is 400 years in the future. He believes he went into the hospital to do a cryogenic experiment on his finger 400 years ago and that he was put into a cryogenic sleep against his will. He believes that he overhears the hospital staff talking about giving him his "final" injection that will kill him.

He tries to enlist the aid of his doctor (played without emotion by Hope Davis) who he begins to trust. As he begins to trust her, he starts doubting his own beliefs.

This movie has a great premise and almost delivers in its execution. Actually, it does, but it's not too satisfying. It's a good movie, but could have been a bit better had Hope Davis' character been a bit more emotional. The movie would have been better served had her character just been a bit less flat.

Recommended with some reservations. If you like the genre, you'll like the movie.
