Heralded as the first North American entry in the growing Dogma '95 canon, Canadian director Carl Bessai's riveting urban drama is raw, bare-boned, and bleak. Johnny (Chris Martin) is a street kid with an insatiable appetite to manipulate, charm, and coerce. After swiping a camera from his pal Albert, he soon becomes obsessed with making movies. He demands that his loyal gang of followers risk themselves and others for the sake of the dramatic scenes and for his own naked lust for power. Despite his reputation as one of country music most uncompromising artists, Johnny Cash was also an man of profound faith, and this documentary which examines his spiritual side and how it was reflected in his work has been given a handsome if straightforward DVD release. Johnny Cash: The Gospel Music of Johnny Cash has been given a widescreen transfer to disc in the aspect ratio of 1.85:1, letterboxed on conventional televisions and enhanced for anamorphic play on 16x9 monitors. The film incorporates a good portion of archival material and the quality is somewhat inconsistent, but most of the footage looks fine and the new interviews are pristine. The interviews and songs are in English, with optional English subtitles for the hard of hearing but no multiple language options. The audio has been mastered in two formats, Dolby Digital Stereo and Dolby Digital 5.1, and both mixes sound quite good. No bonus materials have been included for this release, but the presence of little-seen Cash performance footage from his many appearances with Billy Graham will certainly makes this an item of interest to fans of the Man In Black's spiritual recordings. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
