DVD Synopsis

Director Frank Darabont created this Frank Capra-inspired drama based on a screenplay by his friend and one-time schoolmate Michael Sloane. Jim Carrey stars as Pete Appleton, a screenwriter in the Hollywood of the 1950s. Pete's on top of the world with his first motion picture "Sand Pirates of the Sahara" just released to theaters and his romance with a beautiful starlet (Amanda Detmer) heating up. However, his triumph turns to dismay when he's called before the commie-hunting House Un-American Activities Committee and advised by a studio lawyer and his agent to play ball with the witch hunters. Depressed by the film industry's weak-kneed reaction to the hearings, Pete gets drunk and drives his car north along the California coast, where he crashes from a bridge and wakes up on shore the next morning suffering from amnesia. Wandering into the nearby small town of Lawson, Pete is mistaken for Luke Trimble, a lost hero of World War II who, like most of the area's young men, never returned from the war a decade earlier. "Luke" has soon reunited with both his father (Martin Landau) and his one-time girlfriend (Laurie Holden), and finds that his reappearance has given the citizens of Lawson an emotional boost that's sorely needed. When he refurbishes and reopens his family's decrepit movie theater, the Majestic, Luke revitalizes Lawson just as his memory of his true identity begins to reassert itself. Sloane's original script for The Majestic (2001) was entitled -The Bijou. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

Jim Carrey puts away his comedic talents for a dramatic role in director Frank Darabont's cinematic throwback The Majestic. Warner has done a very nice job at making sure that this 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer is clear of any defects or imperfections that might otherwise mar the image. With deep black levels and bright colors, this is easily a reference quality DVD transfer. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround in both English and French-Canadian. Sporting a vast array of directional effects (especially with composer Mark Isham's lush music score), this is an excellent and crystal clear soundtrack that should please home theater owners. Also included on this disc are English and French subtitles. Fans of the film will be happy to see some extra features available on this disc, even if they are rather minimal. The meatiest of these supplements are eight deleted scenes presented in non-anamorphic widescreen. While the scenes are enjoyable to watch, overall they wouldn't have added much to the final film. Also included on this disc is the enjoyable full-length movie within a movie, "Sand Pirates of the Sahara" (featuring B-movie actor Bruce Campbell), a theatrical trailer for the film, some cast and crew lists of the principle actors and filmmakers, and some information on the Hollywood blacklist of the 1950s. ~ Patrick Naugle, All Movie Guide

Angela D. (JayLou) from RAYMONDVILLE, MO wrote on 11/21/2007...

With an unusual character type, Jim Carrey plays a man in trouble who hides out in a small town pretending to be someone he's not. The story line leading up to the truth gives Jim's character much to learn.
