DVD Synopsis

British actor Peter Howitt wrote and directed this British romantic comedy-drama with a "road not taken" premise recalling the 1921 play If by Lord Dunsany (1878-1957), Frank Capra's It's a Wonderful Life (1946), and O.Henry's short story -Roads of Destiny (1909). Howitt's storyline branches in two directions: Helen (Gwyneth Paltrow) loses her job at a classy London PR firm, has a run-in with a purse-snatcher, and just misses catching her boyfriend Gerry (John Lynch) in bed with his former girlfriend Lydia (Jeanne Tripplehorn). But what if it were one of those days when everything goes right? As the sliding doors close while she stands on a subway platform in the London underground, Helen ponders the events in her alternate reality. The plot of Lord Dunsany's If also hinges on a future determined by catching or missing a train. Sliding Doors was shown at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Bhob Stewart, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

Paramount's DVD release of the 1998 film Sliding Doors, starring Gwyneth Paltrow, John Hannah, John Lynch, and Jeanne Tripplehorn, is presented in widescreen format and can be played in two Dolby Digital formats, either English 5.1 Surround Sound or English Dolby Surround Sound. The film can be viewed with Spanish subtitles or English captions. Unfortunately, there is nothing in the way of trailers, bios, or production notes. Besides the standard interactive and scene-selection menus, this DVD offers little else except the actual film, which (luckily) in and of itself is quite delightful. ~ Jose Promis, All Movie Guide

GREAT MOVIE...I LOVE TO SEE WHAT A 2 SECOND DELAY COULD DO TO SOMEONE'S LIFE....MAKE YOU WONDER!

Sarah H. (soelo) from CAMBRIDGE, MN wrote on 8/24/2009...

This movie is funny and clever. It shows the way Helen's life will turn out based on whether she catches a train or misses it by a few seconds. Jean Tripplehorn is great as her nemesis.

Good movie, interesting, fun, sad, happy, love story.

This is a little interesting story where we follow two possible realities for our main character's life, where her path is changed just by whether she made it though the sliding doors on the train. In which one of her realities is she really better off?
Makes you wonder about those every day decisions which seem to make no impact on our lives. (Like whether or not to run through the yellow traffic light, or stop for the coming red.) Do they really change things more than we could ever imagine?
