Fox originally released the popular action film Speed on DVD as a basic edition, but with the times changing, a special edition was inevitable, and it has been delivered. Another in their series of "5-Star Collections", this loaded 2-disc set continues a tradition that is setting standards. The image, which may just be this set's weakest point, is still quite good. Framed at 2.35:1 and anamorphic, it looks a touch dark for the majority of the picture and colors aren't too vibrant. Still, the overall look of the transfer is nice and clear. The sound, with both DTS and Dolby Digital tracks is very aggressive and dynamic, utilizing the surround field at just the right times, creating a nice effect. The real difference though between this release and the original are the supplements, which are extensive here. To begin with, the first disc has two scene specific commentary tracks. Though the track by director Jan de Bont is quite informative, it's the track from writer Graham Yost and producer Mark Gordon that stands out. Both have a wonderful self-deprecating humor that lends itself well to this kind of mindless, yet fun, action genre. The second disc is where all the fun begins, though, and there is a lot to go through. The main menu is made up of six sections: Action Sequences, Inside Speed, Interview Archive, Extended Scenes, Image Gallery and Promotion. As would be expected, there are a number of featurettes in the first two sections, from how the bus jump was accomplished to visual effects and the complete text screenplay. The third section has interviews with the main cast members and De Bont. Next are five extended scenes, which can be played individually or in a group. As for the image gallery, this includes not only shots from the film, but behind the scenes and personal photos from the cast. Finally, as if all that wasn't enough, is the promotional section. Included here is a music video from Billy Idol of all people, the press kit, theatrical trailer, eleven television spots and an HBO "First Look" which runs just over 24 minutes. Clearly Fox knows what they are doing when they provide this sort of DVD to eager fans. ~ Trent Fordham, All Movie Guide
