Forget about James Bond and Austin Powers, the 20th Century Fox DVD release of
Our Man Flint shows why
James Coburn's Derek Flint is the super-spy of choice for so many movie fans. Coburn starred in two Derek Flint pictures that spoofed the James Bond series while offering thrills of their own along with the laughs.
Our Man Flint mines plenty of humor from the fact that the unflappably cool spy can do everything better than anyone else on the planet. Derek Flint speaks to dolphins, dances with the Bolshoi Ballet, and can tell where assassins dwell just by smelling the hint of saffron on a poison dart. Besides being smart and fun enough to earn multiple viewings, this digital release of
Our Man Flint looks great too. This disc digitally restores the movie's print and features a pristine widescreen anamorphic transfer than shows off
Daniel L. Fapp's swank Technicolor cinematography. The audio track is well balanced and bright and it features
Jerry Goldsmith's excellent score which has become a big favorite with club samplers and collectors of lounge music. It's a shame that the disc doesn't feature a making-of documentary or a commentary track, since
James Coburn is a natural and enthusiastic raconteur. The exploits of Derek Flint are continued in
In Like Flint, and this equally fun sequel is also available on DVD. ~ Nick Dedina, All Movie Guide
