While there are other DVD releases of the celebrated cult film
A Boy and His Dog out there, so far this Lumivision edition is the best. Even if it has quickly gone out of print, it is worth searching for. The widescreen transfer was supervised by the movie's director
and cinematographer, so it's not surprising that it looks great. The DVD also includes a fascinating, often quite amusing audio commentary from writer/director
L.Q. Jones (who is also a respected veteran character actor), the cinematographer, and
L.A. Times critic
Charles Champlin. Since low-budget movies are often more challenging to shoot than big budget pictures, the process of making them can be so much more memorable -- the filmmakers went through hell getting
A Boy and His Dog made and people interested in being the next big thing at
Sundance could learn from this commentary. A favorite of sci-fi fans and animal lovers, the movie (and the
Harlan Ellison story it was adapted from) has been widely attacked by feminist film theorists because it literally shows a man choosing to sacrifice the life of a woman to save his dog. The point is well taken, but it must be noted that this movie really does star one
very special dog. ~ Nick Dedina, All Movie Guide
