DVD Synopsis

Quentin Tarantino wrote and directed this adaptation of Elmore Leonard's 1995 Rum Punch, switching the action from Miami to LA, and altering the central character from white to black. Ruthless arms dealer Ordell Robbie (Samuel L. Jackson), who lives with perpetually stoned beach-babe Melanie (Bridget Fonda), teams with his old buddy Louis Gara (Robert De Niro), just released from prison after serving four years for armed robbery. ATF agent Ray Nicolette (Michael Keaton) and cop Mark Dargus (Michael Bowen) bust stewardess Jackie Brown (Pam Grier), who was smuggling money into the country for Ordell. Ordell springs Jackie, but when middle-aged bail bondsman Max Cherry (Robert Forster) picks her up at the jail, he's attracted to her, and they choose a romantic route with detours. Mistrust and suspicions surface after Jackie pits Ordell and the cops against each other, convincing Ordell that she's going to double-cross the cops. Tarantino commented on the film's budget: "Jackie Brown only cost $12 million. You can't lose. You absolutely, positively can't lose. And you don't have to compromise." ~ Bhob Stewart, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

Miramax's double-disc edition of Jackie Brown can proudly stand aside its similar Pulp Fiction set as one of the most inspired and generous special edition sets of 2002. The first disc is devoted to the film itself: The widescreen image captures Jackie Brown's variety of visual textures with style and the Dolby Digital 5.1 audio serves up the soundtrack with razor-sharp clarity (there is also a DTS option for audiophiles). The first disc also offers the viewer "soundtrack chapters" that allow them to skip to a particular place where a song is used and a subtitle fact track that replaces the usual commentary. Tarantino fans might miss the manic energy he brings to a commentary track but the subtitle track is a fan's delight, covering everything from on-the-set stories to the history of all the participants and trivia about the film's many pop culture references (note: some early copies of this DVD have a problem where this track drifts out of sync with the picture around chapter ten, so let the buyer beware). The first disc also offers plenty of bonuses for DVD-ROM owners, including a trivia game and an option that allows viewers to read the script while they play the movie. The second disc offers a bevy of additional features: In addition to the usual trailers and outtakes, there are original promotional pieces done for MTV, a lengthy video interview with Tarantino, and an insightful review of the film taken from the Siskel and Ebert television show. Fans will love "Jackie Brown: How It All Went Down," a slickly crafted documentary that focuses on the principle cast and crew. Between this documentary, the Tarantino interview, and the subtitle track, this DVD set allows viewers to learn everything there is to know about Jackie Brown. The most entertaining second-disc bonus is "Chicks With Guns," the full-length version of the trashy video Samuel Jackson and Robert De Niro watch in the film. It's a kitschy hoot that will entertain anyone who appreciates the B-movies that influenced Tarantino. All in all, Miramax's DVD edition of Jackie Brown is a definitive edition of the film that offers everything a fan could want and then some. ~ Donald Guarisco, All Movie Guide
