DVD Synopsis

This 60-million-dollar science fiction suspense drama (marketed with an additional 25 million dollars), was adapted from the popular TV series The X-Files -- arriving in theaters while the Emmy-winning series was still being aired, continuing plot threads familiar to many of the series' 25 million viewers, and featuring several familiar recurring characters introduced during the previous five TV seasons. In 15,000 B.C., a strange creature attacks a caveman. Cut to present day, when a boy at the same North Texas spot falls into a pit and is contaminated by a black substance. When a bomb threatens the Dallas Federal Building, special FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) locate the device but are unable to prevent the explosion. The agency blames Mulder and Scully for the disaster, subjecting them to lengthy interrogations while trying to sever their partnership. In a bar, conspiracy theorist Kurtzweil (Martin Landau), a friend of Mulder's father, tells Mulder about the group behind the explosion, the cover-up of the boy's death, the bodies of four infected rescue workers removed from the Federal Building, the secret government, and the forthcoming plague. Mulder and Scully set out to find answers, and their investigation becomes a foray into the fantastic. ~ Bhob Stewart, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

The X-Files: Fight The Future was the first cinematic foray for Chris Carter's television series The X-Files. This DVD edition presents the movie in a high-quality 2.35:1 widescreen transfer and house-shaking Dolby Digital 5.1 Sound. The image quality is excellent throughout the disc's running time; colors are bold and creepy as necessary, as icy terrains, cityscapes, and dark interiors translate equally well to the digital format. Explosions and attacking creatures crackle and bounce between the Surround channels, providing full immersion into the world of Mulder and Scully. Supplemental materials give good background into the television series, the making of the movie, and, of course, the special effects. "The Truth Behind the Making of the X-Files Movie" is nearly a half-hour of glossy interviews and behind-the-scenes footage with cast and crew; it's a must-see for fans of the series. The movie-length audio commentary with Chris Carter and director Rob Bowman is informative but best for diehard fans, as there's a great deal of inside information about characters and plot lines from the television series that newcomers may not understand or care about. Three variations on the theatrical trailer are also included for completists. "Scene Selection" allows access to the DVD's 18 chapters, and cast and crew bios are included in the flimsy booklet inside the DVD's case, though not on the DVD itself. It's a bit of a mystery why the box art claims "extra footage" as one of the bonus features; if there's any included, it's well-hidden as an Easter egg. Otherwise, fans and newcomers alike should find much to like with the overall package. ~ Tim DiGravina, All Movie Guide
